Energy saving lamps of environmentally friendly or eco-bulbs have a dangerous risk than conventional lamps.
From the test results in England, saving lights environmentally friendly energy that when broken will release high levels of mercury substances. Levels of mercury vapor released substances exceed 20 times the safe limit in the room.
The study also mentions a broken lamp potentially endanger the health of pregnant women, infants, and children.
In Britain, the concern was mainly targeted at the type of compact fluorescent light lamps (CFLs) are most widely used.
Chairman of the Federal Environmental Agency (FDA) English Jochen Flasbarth said,”The content of mercury is indeed a weakness of environmentally friendly energy saving lamps. So, now what is needed is technology that can prevent pollution from mercury.”
He said, the benefits and positive impacts of energy saving lamps should indeed be balanced its safety to human health.
In a trial in Germany, the researchers also found that some types of lamps have no protector and can simply break if the temperature is too hot.
Levels of mercury are on the floor after the break lights and then measured and known levels tend to increase even after 5 hours of rupture. In the end, a spokeswoman for the FDA also recommends that children and pregnant women should not be near the energy saving lamps in order to avoid risks that occur as the outbreak of the lamp.
On the other hand, the Health Protection Agency said a broken CFL will not be harmful to health provided that the room has good ventilation so that there is enough light that is able to evacuate the ill effects of light for 15 minutes.
If anything breaks, when cleaning light fractions, we are advised to use protective gloves. Then the gloves and pieces of wrapped in a plastic bag tied tightly.
